Because of how important construction drawings are, there is a need for a high level of accuracy when creating them. This is because they guide the rest of the project and help the parties involved to make informed decisions. To create accurate construction drawings, here are a few points you should take note of:

01. Understand the brief & be realistic

First, you need to get a clear brief from your client and clarify what your deliverables are. This applies both to interior and exterior design projects. The information provided by your client or partners involved will help you determine which approach to take and gives you a broad view of the required scope of work.

You should consider the actual construction project and available resources as much as you would consider the usage; bearing in mind the future interaction with the building, time, and sustainability. For instance, floor plans should have accurate dimension lines for windows, door openings, rooms, closets, depth, etc. Site plans should have a well-defined layout, demarcation lines and precise colour representations of the various areas, and so on.

02. Break it down & work with layers

Taking up the project as a whole will make the process overwhelming. This is why it is necessary to break up the structure into segments, segments into rooms and hallways, etc. When doing this, each room or segment has attributes that fit the purpose they will serve. You should also approach each space from different perspectives and layers to get a more precise idea of how it should play out. To maintain your printing fidelity, work in layers within your design software. This allows you to turn on and turn off features in your drawing, especially inside a PDF file viewer.

For example, your dimensions should be on a single layer such that, if you need to print a version of the file, you can simply turn off the dimension layer in the PDF file and give the same instructions when placing your order in the checkout notes. This way, you would not need to export your drawings all over again if you simply want a different version of it.

03. Master space planning & use symbols

Space planning is important to any design project. Learning this will help you maximize spaces by marking out the zones, focal areas, patterns, and access routes. This helps you envision the experience right from the planning process. With this, you can create a space that is functional and serves its purpose. Use clear symbols to depict specific features, furnishing, electrical appliances and so on. When doing this, it is important that the symbols representing these are accurately positioned across the space. This is another reason to consider the purpose and accessibility when including electrical appliances and is worthy of note when creating electrical drawings for any building.

04. Use annotations for better details

Using annotations and highlighting areas of interests before printing your drawings will help you communicate better with those who will make use of the printed drawings. Taking advantage of different colours, section lines, revision clouds, elevation points, line styles and weights for instance will help you emphasize various parts of the drawings and distinguish different components. Also, this will help others understand your work better. Indicating measurements, textures and materials will also translate into a guideline for accurate performance.
